Our cecropia moth

Last evening we found these mating cecropia moths on the ground just off our balcony. We think they must've gotten blown off their branch during the storm during the night. We read that they stay attached for a whole day.

Cecropia moths are the largest moths in America. This part of Nebraska is nearly the farthest west of their habitat.

The Girl of the Limberlost
is a great story about a girl and moths. Every time I see one of these, it reminds me of that story.

They really are beautiful. I think they have about a 4 inch wing span.
